In a primary election where the results were not in question, the story is the in turnout, which was not expected to be large.
A little more than 16 percent of Jones County’s 20,405 registered voters cast their ballots in the March 12 Presidential Preference Primary Election, which is above the reported 12 percent turnout for the state.
Republican voters turned out in larger numbers than Democrats in Jones County, 16.2 percent to 3.6 percent. Donald Trump received 92 percent of the Republican votes with Nikki Haley receiving 6.7 percent, despite having withdrawn from the race.
Joe Biden received 95.6 percent of the Democratic vote.
Statewide, Trump received 84.5 percent of the Republican vote and Biden 95.2 percent of the Democratic vote. The number of voters who decided to wait to vote on Election Day in Jones County was 1,710, making up 51 percent of the total vote. There were 1,499 who came out to vote during Advance Voting and 113 absentee ballots received by mail.
The next election in Jones County is the General Primary and Non-partisan Election May 21. Advance voting for that election will begin April 29. The last day to register to vote in the May 21 Election is April 22.
