When we take time to reflect on the things that really matter in our lives, we realize that one of the most important topics of our existence is family. That was the case on Saturday morning, July 11, when more than 30 people, mostly descendants of Reuben Roberts, assembled to dedicate a historical marker near where once stood a thriving community in Jones County.
Reuben Roberts Sr. was a Revolutionary patriot and early settler of Jones County, and it was in the district that still holds his name that a rail depot and post office were built when the Georgia Railroad was constructed through the county in 1883. Roberts Station, as it became known, was a thriving center of commerce and an accessible means of transportation for the citizens who lived in that community.
Jones County History & Heritage Inc. dedicated its 12th county historical marker in front of a large crowd present for the ceremony. Diana Simmons read a biographical sketch on Reuben Roberts Sr. and the youngest generation of his descendants did the honor of unveiling the marker.
The marker is located at the intersection of Lite-N-Tie Road and Watson Drive. Jones County History and Heritage would like to express its sincere appreciation to everyone who helped make this marker possible.
