Schools out for the summer, and that means it is time for the Summer Reading program at the Jones County Public Library.
Signups are underway and will continue throughout June and July with the official kick off June 4 that includes outdoor paint activities with slides blow-ups, outdoor games, art activities and popsicles. It all begins at 9 a.m.
Jones County Branch Manger Julie King said this year’s Summer Reading theme is “Color our World.” She said when patrons sign up, they can get sticker sheets, calendars, wristbands and a prize list. Logging reading time for the program began May 23.
King said there are prizes for children, teens and adults.
“Every five hours you read, you receive a prize, or for our adults, a coupon for free books from our Friends of the Library book sale every second Saturday,” she said.
The manager said several programs are scheduled this summer.
• June4: Outdoor Paint Activities with slide blow-ups,
outdoor games, art activities and popsicles.
• June11: Gray Garden Club will be helping our kids make real flower arrangements.
• June17: GCSU Star Lab and Steven Smith from NASA will be presenting programs on Space.
• June25: The Jones County Arts Children’s Theatre will present a program from their summer musical Lion King.
• July2: Pete the Cat and Curious George with story time, book giveaways and activities.
• July9: Recycled Fashion Show. Participants can come at 1:00 and make a wonderful, recycled outfit or bring it with them.There will be judges and prizes.
• July16: Tia Litke from Bramble Bottom Farms in Haddock will present an art demonstration and the kids will be making a wonderful work of art.
• July23: Matthew Forest from GCSU will be leading screen printing and art demonstrations. King said the library will also host movie matineeswith popcorn and juiceevery other Friday. There are scheduled STEAM kit days, teen programs, adult art classes, Stitch ‘n Such andbook clubs.
“Information for all events are posted on the Jones County Library Facebook page, or you can come to the library to get signed up,” she said.
Summer reading program signups are taking place at the library every day. The Jones County Library is located at 146 Railroad Street in Gray.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
