Mattie Wells students win stock market game

Two fifth-grade gifted students from Mattie Wells Elementary School competed in the Georgia Council of Economic Education’s Stock Market Game in the fall and won first place for elementary school students in the state of Georgia.

Leslie H. Mercer is the local veteran of the week. His service time in the U.S. Army was from 1952 - 1954. He did his basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., in a heavy weapons company. He also trained as a combat medic. He was then sent to Korea and served as a company medic with the 4.

Dakota Musselman is the recipient of the 2024 One Team – One Heartbeat scholarship. He was presented the scholarship May 2 by Charles Gibson along with a quilt created for him by Carla Gibson to commemorate the award. The scholarship was founded by Charles and Carla Gibson and presented annually to a deserving Jones County senior. Charles Gibson was an educator for 37 years and retired as the Superintendent of the Jones County School System in 2021. CONTRIBUTED
