Rosa Self Berryhill James

Rosa Self Berryhill James passed away Saturday, May 2, 2026, three days before her 95th birthday.

Rosa was born in Zebulon to the late Benjamin E. Self and Thelma Mable Adams Self. She spent a long career crunching numbers and meticulously keeping books. Rosa began her career with Walker, Meadors, Garrett, and Laney CPA Firm then spent 29 1/2 years keeping the books at the former Crest Lawn Funeral Home with a paper ledger and her tiny pew pencils. She finally made the decision to retire when the parts were no longer available to fix her typewriter.

Rosa proudly raised her family in the Bloomfield Community of South Macon. She was preceded in death by her two husbands that she loved dearly, Clinton Berryhill and Charlie “Jesse” James, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her son, Ray Berryhill; stepdaughters, Debra Jackson and Angela Hartzog, and step granddaughter, Jessica James.

Rosa will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her spirited nature, and her strong will. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Leacroy; daughter-in-law, Donna Berryhill; stepson, Charles E. James, Jr.

(Arlene); son-in-law, Mike Hartzog; six grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Gray Memorial Chapel at 2:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 7, 2026, with visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment was private in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery, where she was laid to rest next to her first husband, Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St.

Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
