The litter problem

Dear editor:

The presence of existing litter is a strong future predictive of increased littering behavior. So if you’re in a place that’s already highly littered like Macon or Jones County, you’re much more likely to litter than if you’re in a place that’s clean or free of litter.”

So, no matter how futile neighborhood or county cleanups might feel, they actually are making a small difference. I give Vickie Bilderback (Keep Jones Beautiful) high marks for staying the course against incredible odds.

Besides enacting or hiring strong proactive code enforcement which we sorely lack, It may make sense for the county to consider county-wide residential garbage pickup. That would eliminate residents need to haul trash down the road. But that will definitely irritate the residents that do not litter. Why should they have to pay for someone else’s misdeeds?

That brings us back full circle to proactive code enforcement to send a strong message that littering is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.

Half the battle is getting the right people in the right position and for voters ensure commissioners rise to expected levels of performance.
