Gaining financial literacy

Dear editor:

April is Financial Literacy Month. On March 27, 2019, Governor Brian Kemp signed the Financial Literacy Month Proclamation. The proclamation states freedom and opportunity are fundamental values of the United States, yet many Americans from all age groups and backgrounds lack the necessary financial life skills to succeed. There is an ongoing need for accessible, reliable financial education to help Georgians achieve their hopes, dreams, and goals.

Thanks to our legislators passing Senate Bill 220 (SB 220). SB 220 requires a mandatory course of instruction in financial literacy for students in eleventh and twelfth grade. Financial literacy is one step closer to being taught in high schools throughout Georgia. Once Governor Kemp signs the bill and the curriculum is approved, our high school students will learn the personal finance and money management skills to make wise financial decisions.

A few weeks ago, I asked you to contact our legislators and encourage them to bring financial literacy to our schools. Now, I’m asking you to contact them again and thank them for making it happen.

Sincerely, Jonathan L. Pitts
