So far in spring practice, the Greyhounds have faced one another in practice.
That changes on Friday, when the spring practice part of the offseason comes to an end when Jones County scrimmages at Veterans with the start time set for 7:30 p.m.
During spring practice, the time on the field has afforded the Greyhounds coaching staff to get a good look at how players have progressed on the field.
And that importance goes beyond just the first-team offensives and defenses, where a majority of last year’s starters return. It also involves younger players as well, whose role this coming fall could range from being in the varsity lineup, as a backup or on the JV side of things.
“We’ve got a lot of really good players and feel really good about our talent,” Greyhounds head coach Mike Chastain said. “We’ve got a lot of questions to answer, so we want to make sure we get all the right people on the field at the right time.”
Other than quarterback, two critical spots at which JCHS is looking to fill holes is at tight end with Austin May graduating with the similar need at center with Grayson Dugger also departing as a senior. On special teams, finding a new kicker and punter will also be a point of focus with Evan West continuing his career in college.
In a departure from last year, the Greyhounds will scrimmage on the road in the spring and host a preseason scrimmage, taking on Buford in August. In 2021, JCHS hosted Valdosta in May with Houston County coming to Greyhound Field for a preseason scrimmage that was greatly shortened by weather.
Following spring practice, the Greyhounds will move into summer workouts, leading into preseason practice and the season opener on Aug. 20 against Northside in the Macon Touchdown Club Kickoff Classic which will be at Mercer University’s Five Star Stadium.
