When the year began, the goal for Torrez Finney was to fight three times. The professional MMA fighter from Jones County gets that wish Aug. 5 for his third bout at the iKON Fighting Championship event against Justin Dorsey.
The bout, which will come in the 185-pound weight class, will be back in Finney’s home state, taking place in the Savannah Convention Center. The fight will also bring greater exposure opportunity for Finney. First, iKON FC is promoted by Jorge Masvidal, an MMA fighter who has competed professionally since 2003 and famously holds the UFC record for quickest knockout at five seconds. In addition, the fight will stream live on UFCFightPass.com, a subscription-based video service that streams combat sports events from around the world.
“It gives me an opportunity to allow me to show my talent and skill against others,” Finney said. “This is a big fight for me because of the platform. It’s a big thing for me; a lot of eyes will be on it.”
Finney’s opponent, Justin Dorsey will come into Aug. 5 with a record of 1-2 to Finney’s 2-0. As always, however, Finney is not taking into account the record of his opponent, pointing out that the rigor of Dorsey’s foes has been a factor.
“He’ll be game-ready and tough,” Finney said. “As long as I go in and be me, I don’t think anyone can stop what I do. The goal is to be 1-0 each time. To go 3-0 in a year would be really good.”
Among Finney’s tactics between now and then will be something that harkens back to his days as an athlete at Jones County – film study.
“I watch a lot of film. I like to study all the details,” Finney said. “He’s a guy that started MMA four years ago...he moves around a good bit, but I don’t know that his wrestling and cardio can hold up to mine. I’m a big-time grappler. Everyone knows about my wrestling pedigree, but my striking is also good. He’s a scrambler and scrappy. He’ll bring the fight to me, which I am excited for.”
Anyone in need of tickets can contact Finney personally or through his social media channels.
