Manslaughter among 12 Grand Jury indictments

Jones County’s Grand Jury considered 12 bills of indictment Aug. 1 and true billed every count of the charges presented.

Those charges ranged from driving violations to drugs, aggravated assault, armed robbery and manslaughter.

Aaron Scott Keough, 30, was arrested July 2 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of methamphetamine, two counts of terroristic threats and acts, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or first offender and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. He was indicted on each of the charges.

Keough was arrested by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kevin Harden after he responded to a complaint about an altercation that upon investigation included shots being fired.

Michael Winston Burney was arrested by Gray Police Officer Brent Zimmerman July 14. Burney was indicted by the Grand Jury for two counts of aggravated assault. During Zimmerman’s investigation of the gun shots, two spent shell casing were found at the scene of the reported incident, and interviews pointed to Burney as the shooter. The weapon that fired the shots, with a disturbing amount of ammunition, was recovered from Burney’s book bag.

Silvano Gerardo Espinoza and Amy Crane were indicted on the charge of cruelty to children in first degree Espinoza, 39, and Crane, 36, were arrested June 9 and charged with cruelty to children in first degree – deprivation of sustenance.

The charges were the result of an investigation that started March 31 when a child under the age of 10 was found walking down a street in south Jones County. JCSO Investigator Lt. Kenny Gleaton said it was determined the child had been living alone in an apartment on New Clinton Road for weeks. The child had been placed there by Espinoza and is now being cared for by DFCS.

Thomas Joshua Smith was indicted for the manufacture of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Stephen Wayne Garey Jr. was indicted for possession marijuana with the intent to distribute The arrests of Smith and Garey were the result of a warrant served June 22 by JCSO Investigator Barron Hall and Lt. Wesley Ransom. The officers went to a residence on Highway 18 East to serve a Bibb County warrant on Stephen Garey for the charge of possession with intent.

Hall said, when they arrived at the property, they discovered evidence of a large amount of marijuana. The officers left and returned with a warrant to search the entire property. During their search, they found a building with a padlocked roll-up door also on the property that ‘reeked’ with the smell of marijuana.

Smith is the owner of the property and the building that contained marijuana plant, packages of marijuana and cash. Shedric Lanorris Mims was indicted for an armed robbery that took place in a local motel. The robbery was reported June 16 and investigated by JCSO Sgt. William Jackson.

Cynthia Denise Foley was indicted for charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. Her charges are due to her involvement in the death of Terri Potts, whose body was found in the driveway of a home off Joycliff Road March 22.

JCSO Investigator John Simmons investigated the death. It was discovered that Foley dragged Potts, who was passed out, from her car and left her lying in the driveway March 17 following a night out in Milledgeville.

The body was discovered in the driveway someone dropping off cigarettes to Potts’ roommate.
