Volley Hounds primed for region play

GREYHOUND VOLLEYBALL

The Volley Hounds met the opportunity for a next step forward earlier this week for the opening of region play. But before seeking the first region win in program history, JCHS entered that span following a tough loss to Mary Persons.

Like other teams on the Lady Hounds schedule, Jones County – 8-3 entering the week – showed how far it has come as a program in being more competitive with teams it has previously faced. In the end, the visiting Bulldogs took a 2-0 win with both games of the match following a common thread. Each time, JCHS started slow and overcame self-inflicted miscues to fight back before Mary Persons claimed a handful of points on each occasion.

“We didn’t play very well; we made too many mistakes,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Lonnie Wheeler said. “The silver lining is that we were a lot more competitive with them than we were last year.”

Having fell 25-17 in the first game, another early deficit found its way to the Lady Hounds in the second one as well before rallying to tie it twice, 12-12 and 13-13. That, however, would be as much as JCHS could muster as the Bulldogs controlled the rest of the way to win.

When were able to attack, we’re effective,” Wheeler said. “We had some passing issues and those hurt us.”
