Youth baseball, softball wrap up spring filled with enthusiasm

JONES COUNTY RECREATION

A season of baseball and softball among players young and old is set to conclude next week among the youth baseball ranks. Following a spring of action at both the Highway 49 and Highway 18 complexes, league champions will crown what has been yet another season of excitement on the diamond for those in coach pitch, tee ball and wee ball all the up to the more experienced players.

“Everything’s gone well. We had a really good turnout this year,” Jones County Parks and Recreation Director Bert Rosenberger said. “It’s close to what we’ve had in the past.”

Regardless of the league, age group or location, Rosenberger says that there’s been one key element to success this spring.

“The people that are pouring into these kids, giving their time, that’s what makes these leagues go,” Rosenberger said. “We’re very blessed in Jones County. We have a lot of people that care about these kids. Whether it’s by being coaches or board members, they put a lot of time into it.”

Those seasons may be wrapped up this week, but the activity on baseball and softball fields nearby will not. While various all-star teams are getting set to take aim at hopes of advancing past district and to the state level of competition, adult softball leagues have begun to pick up steam. Play in the men’s church league began last week with the Women’s Grayberry League slated to begin in June.
