A Jones County defendant entered a guilty plea to the charge of aggravated assault and received a 10-year sentence for the offense.
Jameson Tyler Keys was arrested on the charges of aggravated assault, simple battery and criminal trespass March 13, all under the family violence act.
Keys entered his guilty plea in Jones County Superior Court May 2 and received a total of 10 years with the first 120 days served in confinement. The remainder of the sentence is to be served on probation.
The defendant received credit for time already served from the date of his arrest.
A report of his arrest by Lt. Jacob Hunnicutt with the Gray Police Department stated he was dispatched to an address on Senior Center Way in reference to a physical dispute about 4 p.m. March 13.
Hunnicutt said, when he arrived, a woman was sitting on the ground in front of the residence, and Keys had locked himself inside. The lieutenant said he saw bruising on the woman’s face and neck.
He said the complainant told him the offender had choked her.
Hunnicutt said the offender refused to make contact with officers or come to the door. The lieutenant said the offender was identified as Keys.
Hunnicutt said, since the victim was safe and the offender was alone in the residence, the decision was made to leave the scene. He said the victim was taken to the Gray Police Department for an interview.
The officer said the complainant told him she and Keys had been arguing for days because she told him she no longer wanted to be with him. She said she locked herself in her room, and Keys broke down the door.
The complainant said he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her off the bed. Then he started choking her. She said he dragged her down the hall and choked her again. At some point, she was able to escape the home and went to a neighbor for help.
The officer said the victim was advised of the services available for family violence victims.
Hunnicutt said he obtained warrants for Keys for aggravated assault, simple battery and criminal trespass, and the warrants were entered into GCIC.
Hunnicutt said he was notified about 10:45 p.m. that Keys was outside the residence. GPD officers Daniel Pointer and Sgt. Paul Hathaway arrived to assist. The lieutenant said he saw Pointer running to the back of the building. He said Pointer notified them he had the offender at taser point, and Keys was taken into custody.
Hathaway served the warrants on the offender.
