Although it may not seem so in the heat of the summer, the rites of football season are gradually approaching.
A friendly reminder comes courtesy of the concept of a calendar, and that was also evident last week at and near Greyhound Field.
While the first official date of practice in pads is not until July 29, the proverbial green light came on last week when June 3 arrived following the first of the summer’s two GHSA-mandated dead weeks, during which no athletic activities can take place.
Little time was wasted by the Greyhounds, whose first official week of the summer included them getting on-field work in. It comes as part of a summer of activity across the state with many programs’ regimen including optional team activities, some with other teams, in addition to players going to camps and 7-on-7 passing tournaments.
The Greyhounds summer will build toward the official start of practice in late July, a key step toward a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 9 at Mary Persons and the season opener Aug.
16 against Veterans. The matchup with the Warhawks will be one of three home games in a row to start the season with Woodland and Hampton on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30 before the first road game Sept. 6 at Ola.
