A suspected shoplifter is facing multiple charges after running from law enforcement officers of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and Gray Police Department.
Charlyn Gwentte Worthy, 42, was arrested May 28 and charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, misdemeanor obstruction of law enforcement, holding a wireless telecommunication device, expired registration, reckless driving, passing in a no passing zone, suspended registration, suspended or revoked license, no insurance, driving too fast for conditions, aggressive driving, failure to obey traffic control device and failure to maintain lane.
A May 28 report of Worthy’s arrest by Corp. Thomas Sullivan stated he received a ‘be on the lookout’ for a tan Honda and black sedan in reference to two black females shoplifting at a store in Haddock.
He said JCSO Deputy Richard Langston went to the store to watch the video of the shoplifting and spoke to the store clerk. Langston was told the vehicle driven by the offender left the parking lot and turned toward Gray.
Sullivan said, as he was turning on East Clinton Street from Highway 18, he noticed a tan Honda driven by a black female. He said as he was passing the Honda, the driver attempted to cover her face with her hand.
The officer said he turned around and broadcasted his location. He said Gray Police Department Lt. Jacob Hunnicutt was at the railroad track and advised that he turned around to get behind the Honda. Hunnicutt also told Sullivan that he got a hit on the Honda from a Flock camera earlier that day in reference to the owner having a warrant. He said he had attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled.
Sullivan said he fell in behind the GPD officers following the Honda until the driver lost control and left the roadway just south of the Gray Bypass. He said the car struck a road sign, and the driver exited the vehicle.
The corporal said the driver was caught after a short foot chase and was identified as Worthy. He said Langston arrived with photos of the shoplifting that showed the suspect leaving the Haddock store with a black trash can filled with items.
Sullivan said, after the car was pulled out of the woods, the trash can was found in the rear driver’s seat. He said other clothing items with sale tags still on them, a swimming pool and ice maker that appeared to have been stolen from another location were also found.
Sullivan said the items were collected and placed into evidence by Langston.
