Lady Hounds get quick start with season fast-approaching

SOFTBALL HOUNDS

Some fall sports across Georgia have the luxury of a bit of lead time in August before the first contest.

Fast-pitch softball is not one of them. Monday was the first official day that teams statewide could hold official practice, and the Lady Greyhounds went right to work. Even with wet field conditions that limited getting fielding practice in, that hardly washed out things for JCHS, which spent a good portion of its Monday evening session engaging in some team-building activities.

There’s not much time to waste for Jones County, which scrimmages at Social Circle on Thursday before next week’s season and region opener at McDonough prior to the home opener on Aug. 7 against Perry.

“Social Circle usually has a pretty good team. We’re looking forward to seeing how we match up against them,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “It should be a pretty good test for us.”

Wednesday’s game against the Panthers is one of the non-region variety that’ll emphasize quality of opponents over quality due to a total of 18 region games.

One upcoming opponent, Coffee, made the round of 16 last year with Eastside advancing to the Elite 8 in Columbus. Thursday’s scrimmage opponent, Social Circle, is a past state champion.
