The text of the marker tells the history of the church that began in a school building in 1928.
The history of Plentitude Baptist Church was celebrated recently with the placement of a historic marker that pays homage to its founders.
The marker was unveiled by Jones County History and Heritage Nov. 24, and it is the 11th marker placed by the organization.
History and Heritage member Earl Colvin presided over the unveiling aided by Plentitude Baptist Church member Melba Chapman. The event was attended by members of the church, History and Heritage members and a large gathering of community members.
The text of the marker stated that Gray Baptist Church members Mr. and Mrs. T. Hunt Taylor began teaching Sunday School at Plentitude School in 1928 with the permission of the school board. The one-room building, built in 1868, was the former Plentitude Academy.
Following a revival that was held Aug. 25-29, 1868, the church received permission to hold a baptism in Walnut Creek. The church’s first pastor, Rev. J.R. Meek, was called Oct. 26, 1928, and the church was formed as the independent body, Plentitude Missionary Baptist Church, July 24, 1936.
The Taylors became active members of the church and served it faithfully until their deaths.
In addition to the marker, a book detailing the history of the church was also compiled and printed. The book is available for sale at the church.
