Mike Chastain, the most successful head football coach in the history of the Greyhounds football program, has resigned, along with Jones County School System Athletic Director Chad Alligood.
Both confirmed their resignations to The Jones County News on Monday.
Chastain’s status was also confirmed by the Jones County School System in an exclusive statement sent to the Jones County News by JCSS Executive Director of Human Resources Jennifer Holland.
“Mike Chastain has officially resigned from his position as head football coach at Jones County High School after six successful seasons,” the statement said.
The resignations come following a called Jones County Board of Education meeting on Jan. 23 in which Chastain and Alligood vigorously responded to complaints that had been filed over social media in the days leading up to the meeting.

Chastain ends his time in Gray with a record of 56-20, three region championships, and two semifinal appearances, more than any other head coach in program history after coming to Gray in 2019. Chastain also coached the Greyhounds to at least the quarterfinal round three times. Prior to his arrival, Jones County had reached at least the quarterfinals a combined three times.
In six seasons at the helm in Gray, Chastain's teams won at least 10 games four times.
Alligood came to Jones County after being announced as the school’s athletic director in December of 2022 following a coaching career of which the majority was at Northside Warner Robins, where he was head coach from 2020-22.
Alligood’s time in Jones County has included facility signage upgrades, the change-over of JCHS scoreboards to video boards in addition to transitions within baseball as well as boys and girls basketball programs with new head coaches being hired.
“I made the decision that was best for me and my family,” Alligood said. “I’m excited to see what God has for us next.”
