Nov. 19, 1929 - March 1, 2025
On March 1, 2025, our beautiful, sweet mother, Nina Durrett Childs passed away peacefully at the age of 95. She was born November 19, 1929, in Macon, Georgia to Helen Haag Hayes and Robert Rogers Durrett. While at a college dance, she met her future husband, D.V.
Childs. They remained contentedly connected until D.V.’s death in 1997.
Nina was the heart of our home and family. She raised three children in a happy and loving home to be thoughtful, caring adults. As the heart and soul of our family, she will be deeply missed.
Nina believed in the importance of an education and had many accolades in the field.
She received an A.B. at Georgia College; an M.Ed. at Mercer University; an Ed.S. at the University of Georgia; and an Ed.D. at Nova University. She loved helping and counseling people in need. She was Licensed and State Board Certified in Counseling; Certified School Counselor; Certified Rehabilitation Supplier with the State Board; Domestic Violence Counselor; and Forensic Counselor. Nina also believed in community involvement serving her church as President of Episcopal Women and as a member of the Altar Guild at Christ Episcopal Church in Macon, GA.
She was a lifelong member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Traveling the world was also important to Nina.
She was always planning her next trip before the current one ended. Nina thought that through travel, she could better understand the world and receive an education that she could not receive in school. Her travels included Asia, South America, Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Egypt and Africa (in which she was zapped by the airport scanner because she forgot that she had a recently implanted pacemaker).
As a lover of art, Nina taught art at Miller Senior High and collected works by various artists. Her home was decorated immaculately with some of her own artwork and that of some well-known artists. Nina enjoyed giving tours to anyone who was as interested in art as she.
Nina is survived by her son, Dauphin Vesro Childs, III (Susan) of Gray, GA; her daughters, Ves Childs Jones (Charles H. Jones, decd.) of Alpharetta; and Nina Durrett Childs of Gray, GA. She is survived by her grandchildren, Dauphin Vesro Childs, IV of Gray, GA; Nina Childs Wills of Atlanta, GA; and Ailee Durrett Wills of Milledgeville, GA; and great-grandchild, Dauphin Vesro Childs, V of Gray, GA. She is predeceased by D.V. Childs Jr.; and one sister, Alice Durrett Bradford.
Funeral service and burial took place on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 11:00 at Cedar Ridge Cemetery, 111 Greene Settlement Road, Gray, GA 31032. The Rev. Cynthia C. Knapp officiated.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon GA, 31201, or to a charity of their choice.
