April 2, 1941 - April 12, 2025

Alton Zander Attaway, 84, of Macon, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Antebellum Senior Living, following a brief illness.

A celebration of Alton’s life was held on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 7015 Rivoli Road, Macon, Georgia. Visitation for family and friends began at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 2:00 p.m.

The Reverend Andy Oxford officiated.

Alton was born on April 2, 1941, in Milan, Georgia, to the late Ernest Attaway and Emma Cravey. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Tony Attaway, and his sister, Hazel Ussery. Alton’s career in banking began with Citizens and Southern Bank, and he retired as a Vice President with Liberty Bank. Alongside his wife, he also owned and operated Zander’s Deli for fifteen years. A faithful and devoted member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Alton served as both a deacon and a cherished member of the choir.

He deeply loved Jesus and his church, living a life that reflected unwavering faith and compassion.

Alton was a man of many gifts—wise, humble, analytical, and endlessly kind. He could accomplish anything he set his mind to.

His hands were rarely still, whether he was working with wood, tending to his garden, or feeding the birds that graced his backyard.

He found peace in the solitude of his private estate, especially hiking its wooded trails and resting by the creek in quiet reflection.

Alton is survived by his devoted wife of forty-nine years, Sandra Faye Attaway, his sons, Jeffery Attaway (Marlene) and Michael T. Attaway (Robin), his granddaughter, Mary Beth Attaway, and his sisters, Eberline Spires (Corbet) and Pam Alligood. He also leaves behind a host of loving nieces and nephews. Sandra was not only his wife but his best friend and cherished travel companion. Their love and partnership were a beautiful testimony to a life well lived together.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church, 7015 Rivoli Road, Macon, Georgia 31210.

Gray Memorial Chapel is honored to be entrusted with the care of the Attaway family. You may register online condolences at graymemorialchapel.com.
