Mrs. Mildred Bates Avery, 91, of Gray, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2025. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 27, 2025, at 3 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church in Jones County with Rev. Mark White, Rev. Eddie Windham and Dr. Ronnie Griffin officiating. Interment was in the James Cemetery in Jones County.
Daughter of the late William Lonnie and Mattie Scott Bates, Mrs.
Avery was a native of Wheeler County, GA, but lived in Jones County most of her adult life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Boyd Avery; son, “Tommy” Lonnie Thomas Avery; sister, Lola Hall and son-in-law, Buster Bass. Mrs. Avery was the business manager of the family logging and farming operation, a homemaker and a member of New Salem Baptist Church. Survivors include daughters: Wanda Avery Bass, Linda (“Butch”) Reece, Pauline (Chris) Brower, Patricia Avery Roberson, all of Jones County and son: Johnny (Patty) Avery of Jones County; 7 grandchildren 20 great-grandchildren also survive, many nieces and nephews. Williams White Columns Funeral Home of Gordon was in charge of arrangements.
