Throughout his coaching journey — even though it was in colors other than the purple and gold of Jones County — home was always nearby for Bradley Hunnicutt.
A former standout at quarterback for the Greyhounds, Hunnicutt never moved away from Jones County as a coach, even during stops at Howard in Macon followed by Baldwin in Milledgeville.
Now, after time spent commuting back and forth, Hunnicutt is back home as the Greyhounds’ offensive coordinator under new head coach Justin Montgomery.
“It’s awesome to be back home,” Hunnicutt said. “Being able to come back home, it was my dream. The passion that I have for this town is unbelievable. The passion that this town has for football is unbelievable.”
This won’t be Hunnicutt’s first time on the Greyhounds’ staff as he was previously on board under former head coach Mike Chastain. Now, after getting varied experience outside of Jones County, Hunnicutt is back in Jones County.
“Yeah, I definitely grew,” Hunnicutt said. “That was the main reason I wanted to get away from Jones County for a while, just to try and make a name for myself as a coach somewhere else.”
A season ago for the Braves, under previous JCHS assistant and now head coach Kevin Patterson, Baldwin’s offense scored at least 28 points six times, passing for 1,787 yards and rushing for more than 2,400.
Now, after time away from Gray, Hunnicutt is back in Jones County under the Greyhounds’ new coaching staff. It came after a rather long interview with Montgomery.
“We had a very extensive interview. I think it was almost four hours long,” the new coordinator said. “I just fell in love with Coach Montgomery and his passion for the game and his family-oriented plan.”
