GREYHOUND SOFTBALL
For three innings, Warner Robins gave Jones County all that it could handle last Thursday with the Lady Hounds holding onto a 2-0 lead through three innings.
Then, in more ways than one, Jones County’s fortunes turned around in a large way as a 10-run inning ended the game early on the mercy rule. The game may have been locked up in the bottom half of the inning for the Lady Greyhounds, but in reality, the decisive inning began in top half, too.
“We started out a bit slow and had trouble getting going,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “We kind of woke up a little bit and played like we should.”
With Ansley Pegg on the mound, JCHS got out of a one-out, bases loaded jam.
Having already fought through one layer of the inning, Jones County harnessed that momentum going into the bottom half, ripping 10 runs on the board to take down Warner Robins by the mercy rule. In the win, Tranasia Parker had a double, homer and three runs batted in Ansley Pegg helping herself with two hits.
“They just made adjustments and got a spark going,” Burt said.
There were many who stepped up at the plate in the fourth for Jones County as the Lady Greyhounds batted around. Marissa Moore was among them with her two RBIs. She’s one of the handful of younger players who have stepped up in the past week or so due to minor injuries as the JCHS coaches have tweaked the lineup a bit.
“We’ve got some injuries and are moving people around,” Burt said. “We’ve had some stepping up for us, we’ve put some young players in there and they have stepped up.”
The win set the Lady Hounds up with a 4-1 record entering the week that tied them for second place with Union Grove, who JCHS played on Wednesday of this week. Both headed into Wednesday trailing first-place Ola, who was 6-0.
