The Lady Greyhounds already know that they’ll be in one of the state playoff super regionals. Their seeding for that stage of the season will be set by how the region tournament shakes out, and all of that will be determined this week.
Jones County began the week with a Monday game at region-leading Ola, with two other contests against Warner Robins and Union Grove, the latter of which was on Thursday and also closed out the regular season. That game could also very well decide whether or not JCHS begins the region tournament at home or on the road.
A 12-7 loss to Ola on Monday dropped Jones County’s record to 7-3 in the region, one game behind Union Grove. Wins over Warner Robins this past Tuesday and Union Grove on Thursday, however, would tie the teams for second place.
“It’s at the point of year where little things matter more,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “It’s a big week with two big games to determine in our path for the postseason.”
Jones County headed into this week with a 14-1 crushing of Dutchtown before a pair of low-scoring games in back-to-back days, a 2-0 win against Perry and a 4-2 loss to Bleckley County.
“We’re starting get things going in the right direction,” Burt said.
“Seeing that kind of stuff going into the region push, that should help us a lot.”
The loss to the Royals came after back-to-back doubles got Bleckley County on the board against starting pitcher Cate Downey. Even in the loss, Jones County came back from being down 4-0 going into the seventh inning, putting the winning run aboard with two outs before losing 4-2.
Against Perry, Ansley Pegg went the distance to get the win, holding the Panthers to five hits.
Jones County scored single runs in the second and fourth, being led by Tranasia Parker, Ella Jenkins, Allie Willis and Leah Betts. Parker homered in the win with Betts and Willis having doubles.
“Our pitchers did a great job (last) week.
We played good defense behind them,” Burt said.
