Sullivan shatters record; Ragins and Bond sweep 1-2 spots

Spring break ended last week for the Jones County track teams, as did the time away from official competition.

But both teams emerged from spring break in a big way, with Austin Sullivan shattering a seven-year-old school record on Saturday at the BSN Eagles Landing Invitational.

It came a day after Zion Ragins and Javious Bond swept the top two spots in the 100- and 200-meter events on Friday night in Monticello.

Sullivan’s run came against a highly competitive field on day in which he finished fourth with a time of 10:15.57 and Joshua Barber’s 11:08.89 was good for 11 th place. Kyle Whipple’s time of 4:47.23 placed 13 th in the 1600 meters.

“He’s been doing good, but he made a huge jump,” Geoff Moore, who coaches the Jones County distance runners, said of Sullivan “I was really proud of him for that, he’s been after that for a while.”

Those showings came a day after Bond and Ragins led the Greyhounds to wins with times of 10.73 and 10.79 in the 100 meters and 22.53 and 22.70 in the 200 meters. JCHS also took boys first-place finishes in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.42 and Grayson Dugger in the discus with a throw of 139-00.00.

Other top finishers were Gunner Kent’s time of 5:31.88 taking fourth in the 1600-meter run, Javion Solomon being second in the high jump at 5-10.00, and Derrick Cleveland’s 40-11.50 throw in the shot put that gave him a third-place finish.

Camryn Wommack gave the Lady Greyhounds the win in the 3200 meters with a time of 13:10.65 with Amaris Ridgeway being first in the triple jump at 35-01.50.

In the 200 meters, Tykeria Lamar was third with a time of 27.88, Tranasia Parker’s jump of 4-08.00 was good for second in the high jump with Kimmya Epps and Parker placing second and third in the discus with throws of 81-10.00 and 80-09.00. The Lady Hounds were also third in the 4x100 relay with a time of 51.79.
