Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gray express heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and sympathy shown by their neighbors following two recent tragedies affecting church members across the nation.
President Russell M. Nelson, the 17th President and Prophet of the Church, passed away on September 27 at age 101. A renowned heart surgeon, President Nelson performed Utah’s first open-heart surgery in 1955 before being called as an apostle in 1984 and later as President in 2018. During his ministry, he emphasized the need for unity and compassion, teaching that “as we become peacemakers, we will find joy in helping to heal hearts and homes.”
The next day, a Latter-day Saint congregation in Grand Blanc, Michigan, suffered a devastating attack that left four people dead, eight injured, and the church building severely burned.
Amid these heartbreaking events, members of the Gray congregation have been uplifted by thoughtful gestures from their community, including an anonymous handcarved gift left at the meetinghouse. President Whitney Palmer, local leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gray, shared: “I’m grateful to live in a community filled with faith in Jesus Christ. When tragedy strikes, we come together to lift and support our neighbors and friends.
It is He who brings true comfort.
As the Savior taught, ‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid’ (John 14:27).” The Apostle Paul counseled followers of Christ to “weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15).
Local members say the love and prayers shared by friends and neighbors in Gray have been a comforting fulfillment of that scripture.
