The ribbon cutting for the new Friendly Gus located at 240 James Street in Gray was well attended by those who planned to be there and a constant stream of customers who were surprised by the event.
The Aug. 11 event was hosted by the Jones County/Gray Chamber of Commerce, and attendees welcomed by Chamber President Chloe Crutchfield.
Friendly Gus is owned by Cochran Brothers. The owner, Guy Cochran, son Wick, who is co-owner, and son-in-law Matt Jones, CEO and President, all spoke at the opening.
Jones was the first to speak and
DEBBIE LURIE-SMITH/Staff introduced the staff. He said the operation is run by him and Wick.
“We are very excited to be a part of this community,” he said.
Wick said Cochran Brothers is a fifth-generation business, and they take pride in that.
“We want to get to know you and build relationships,” he said. “Hopefully you will feel that when you come in.”
Guy Cochran said the property was purchased in 2004 with the intent to build the store right away. He said the recession slowed the construction of the store, but it was always in the plan.
He thanked everyone who attended.
“We are excited about being part of the community and are invested in the communities where we are,” he said.
The owner said he is proud of his country and feels blessed to live in America.
“We believe the reason this is the greatest country in the world is because it is based on Christian values,” he said.
Cochran concluded his comments by leading a prayer, which was followed by the ribbon cutting.
