FOOTBALL HOUNDS
Greyhound fans should be confident, at least on paper, going into Thursday’s game at Eagles Landing. Jones County is unbeaten in eight meetings against the Eagles, winning all but one matchup by 18 points or more. Eagles Landing is 1-4 with losses having been to Marist, Grayson and in its region opener to Union Grove. The game, originally scheduled for Friday, has been rescheduled to Thursday due to expected weather from Hurricane Ian.
With a win Thursday, Jones County, which was off last week, can start 2-0 in the region, giving itself a leg up near the top of the standings.
The Greyhounds are one of three teams to have a 1-0 start to region play along with Union Grove and Dutchtown, which was ranked fourth in GHSA Class AAAAA in last week’s AJC.com rankings. The only team to not yet play a region game is Ola, which Jones County hosts next week.
The rigor of the schedule will certainly pick up a few notches after this week. First will be Ola, a 2-2 team that faces a Warner Robins team that is off to a slow start by recent standards, 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the region. After that comes a road trip to Dutchtown. Already having beaten Warner Robins, the Bulldogs are 5-0 and have not allowed more than 14 points in a single game, holding three opponents to a single touchdown. The Jones County– Dutchtown game has all but decided the region champ the last two years, and based on the start of region play, could do so again.
Speaking of Warner Robins, the Demons come to Gray Oct.
28 prior to the regular-season finale on Nov. 4 at Union Grove.
