–George Sheffield My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?--Mt 27:46 At 12 noon on Calvary, a strange darkness fell across the land. This wasn’t a solar eclipse because there was a Passover full moon. It wasn’t a rainstorm. Not one of the gospels mention rain or clouds or a storm.
This was the thick darkness mentioned in Ex 10, a darkness so thick it could be felt. And Jesus, hanging on the cross, felt that darkness.
Jesus called hell outer darkness (Mt 22:13) and now from 12 noon to 3p, He was cast into that outer darkness as He became sin for us, suffering the hell due us. The Father forsook the Son in order to pour out His wrath against sin on Jesus. God had abandoned God. And Jesus cried out My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?
During those three hours, Jesus drunk the cup of wrath for our sakes.
Abandoned by God, He took our hell for us, and those who repent and are saved will never know that hell; never know the taste of that cup, never be forsaken by God.
