Drinking beer in car leads to arrest, prison time

Drinking a beer while stopped at a traffic light would never seem like a good idea. Add a handgun and marijuana in the floorboard to the mix while being a convicted felon, and that is a recipe for a return trip to jail.

Memorial Day in Gray was marked by two events to remember the veterans who gave their lives in the service of their country.

Council to give raises to city employees

The question of a raise for employees of the City of Gray was a topic brought up at a called meeting of the city’s Personnel Committee. Mayor Pro Tem James Collins called the May 25 meeting to order and immediately addressed the salary issue.

2022 ELECTION

Early voting for the June 21 runoff election begins Monday, June 13, and concludes Friday, June 17. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the elections office at the Jones County Government Center. Call 478-986-3222 for more information.

Woman dies in car accident

A 38-year old Jones County woman was pronounced deceased at the scene of a one-car accident last week. A report by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeffrey Robinson stated Christina Pipkin Wilson was traveling northbound on Griswoldville Road at approximately 8:50 p.m.

BOE takes first look at draft FY2023 budget

The Jones County Board of Education had its first look at the 2022-23 draft budget that not only includes increased funds from the state but also an eliminated deduction. The May 26 budget workshop was called to order by Chairman Ginger Bailey.

City considers ordinance regulating tiny homes

The tiny home movement seems to have made its way to Gray with City Council members considering adding square feet minimums to building ordinance. The topic was discussed at the May 16 meeting of all city committees that was called to order by Mayor Ed Barbee.

Trial ends with guilty verdict

A Jones County defendant was sentenced to five years following the guilty verdict for one of the two charges against him. Jeremy Ross Gunnells opted to take his chances with a jury May 23 for the two counts of interference with government property.
