The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Oct. 4-16, 2025.
Oct. 6
Driver and passenger arrested
Sgt. Walker conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle showing expired registration. Walker made contact with the female driver and male passenger of the vehicle and the female driver advised Walker that the vehicle had just been purchased 15 minutes prior to the stop. Walker asked the male passenger for his identification and the male advised the sergeant that he did not have one. The male subject gave Walker his name and date of birth, which Walker found to be false. The female driver’s information came back to show that she had a suspended license and a warrant. At that time, the female driver was placed under arrest. The male passenger was detained due to his erratic behavior inside the vehicle before getting out. There was also the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Due to the odor of marijuana, Walker conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, but found nothing. Walker went back to the male subject and did a more intrusive search of the male subject’s person. The female driver stated multiple times that the male passenger had some marijuana, but it belonged to her. During the body search of the male subject, Walker retrieved a bag of marijuana hidden under the male’s private parts in his shorts. It was at that time the male advised Walker that he had given a false name and date of birth. Both subjects were transported to the Jones County LEC. The male subject was charged with giving false name and date of birth and possession of marijuana less than one ounce. More information came in on the male subject showing that he was wanted in two counties. The female driver was charged with possession of marijuana less than one ounce and suspended license.
Oct. 9
Outstanding warrant
Inv. Hall was in the area of Hwy. 49 and Hampton Lakes heading north when he observed a vehicle traveling in front of him with no working right brake light. Hall conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the male driver and male passenger. Hall gathered both male subject’s information and had dispatch run the information. Dispatch advised Hall that the driver of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in Jones County. The male passenger’s information came back fine. A search of the vehicle revealed a pill bottle located behind the driver’s seat. Inside the bottle revealed several muscle relaxers along with suspected Oxycodone. The bottle was collected for evidence. The male driver was transported to the Jones County LEC. The case is pending results of the pills from the crime lab.
Oct. 11
Expired registration
Officer Meeks was patrolling the area of Gray Hwy. near Lite-N-Tie Road when she did a routine check on a tag number to check for valid registration.
When she ran the tag number through the GCIC system, it came back to show the vehicle had expired registration. Meeks activated her blue lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The officer made contact with the male driver and female passenger and advised the reason for the stop. The male driver stated that the registration was current. Meeks advised the male subject that the registration is showing expired as of June 2025.
The male questioned the officer and asked to see the information she ran. Meeks let the male subject see the information she ran, and had dispatch run the male’s driver’s license number.
Dispatch advised Meeks that the male’s license was suspended for failure to appear. Officer Farley arrived on scene to assist.
The male driver advised the officer that he had just had a background check done and this information did not show his license suspended. Meeks explained to the male that the background check only shows recent arrests, not a driver’s history. The male subject was then placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County LEC. The male was charged with expired registration and driving on a suspended license.
Oct. 15
Stolen vehicle
Sgt. Humphries was dispatched to a local residence in reference to a stolen vehicle. The complainant advised the sergeant that her vehicle was stolen by a guest she was allowing to stay at her home. The complainant stated that she has been letting a male subject stay with her for about the last two months. The complainant also stated that she had just purchased the vehicle within the last couple of months and has not had a chance to get the vehicle registered nor get insurance on the vehicle. She advised Humphries that the male subject came to her and asked to borrow the vehicle and she told him no due to the registration, tag and insurance.
The complainant stated she took a nap, and when she awoke, the vehicle was gone. Humphries advised the complainant that her vehicle would be entered on the NCIC/GCIC database as stolen.
The female advised she wished to press charges against the male subject, and Humphries advised her a warrant will be issued for him.
Oct. 16
Soap-lifting
Dep. Morris was dispatched to a local business in reference to shoplifting. Upon arrival, the deputy met with the manager of the business, and was shown a video of the theft. On the video, the deputy saw two individuals, a male subject and a female subject. The footage shows the female subject pick up a package, turn around and put the package in her purse. The manager told Morris the package was a 12 pack of Dial Gold Soap valued at $10.50. The video footage was forwarded to Dep. Morris at the JCSO.
Oct. 18
Another business robbed
Dep. Robinson was dispatched to a local business in reference to a burglary. The caller stated that the glass door of the business was busted open. Once on scene, Robinson made contact with an employee of the business that stated the door was busted when she arrived, she went inside and noticed the cigarette case was broken into. The employee stated that there were Newport cigarettes missing from the case.
The employee pulled up the camera footage and Robinson noticed what appeared to be two male subjects, one wearing a black and gray hood with a mask and the other was wearing a yellow and tan hoodie with a mask. In the video you can see that one of the subjects was attempting to open the safe that was on the floor behind the register, however, never was able to get in the safe. Robinson then saw the two subjects began to steal lighters and cigarettes placing them into a black bag.
The video then shows the two subjects leaving the business on foot heading south out the front of the store. Robinson confirmed with dispatch that the alarm on the business never went off.
Robinson photographed the scene and issued a case card to the employee with the case number. The employee advised the deputy that she would obtain a copy of the video footage and Robinson advised her to let the Sheriff’s Office know when the copy was ready.
