Lady Hounds bounce back with dominant defensive showing

GIRLS HOOPS

A few days after coming up on the short end of a top-10 matchup, the Lady Greyhounds bounced back nicely in Saturday’s HypeSouth Invitational at Macon’s Central High School.

A stellar defensive effort by Jones County made for a satisfying 55-33 win for the Lady Hounds, four days after falling 62-52 at Warner Robins.

“The defensive intensity that they came out with was exceptional. That may have been the best job that they have done since I have been here,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said of Saturday’s win. “It was a team effort. It was not just one individual. Everybody was mentally ready for a challenge.”

The Trojans could do little with what Jones County (1-1) dialed up defensively, the aggressive pressure holding Lee County to single digits in all but one quarter. Not only that, the Trojans’ top scorer was held to 11 points, well below her average of more than 25.

“That was our goal, to limit her touches,” Gray said.

With defense like that, Jones County was able to play plenty of complimentary basketball, led by the 14 points of Desirae Dumas, 13 from Kamiyah Adams, and 10 by Aubrey Norris.

The Lady Hounds, who trailed 9-6 through one quarter, took over from there, outsourcing the Trojans 17-5 in the second quarter to lead 23-14 at halftime prior to a 36-22 advantage through three quarters of play.

The Lady Greyhounds hit the court again next week for the start of region play, hosting McDonough on Tuesday and Eagles Landing on Friday.

“There are still some things we can work on, but to play like that responding to a loss, we’re really happy about that,” Gray said.
