LIZELLA – Jones County's softball all-stars in the age 7-8 division made their way to the district tournament last week.
By virtue of a handful of wins that advanced them to the tournament finals, Jones County will play in the South Sectional scheduled for next weekend.
Jones County began the double-elimination tournament played at Western Little League in western Bibb County with a 12-7 win on Friday against Dudley. Saturday's 15-1 win against Western Little League sent Jones County to Monday's championship round, giving them a day of rest and also forcing their opponent to beat them twice to win the tournament title.
Western did just that, singling in the winning run late Monday to win 18-17 and force a decisive title game on Tuesday.
Jones County showed plenty of grit on Monday. After leading 3-0 in the first, they fell behind 5-3 before a second-inning rally retook the lead 7-5 thanks to a big hit by Brooklyn Riley.
Western pulled ahead, however, doing its best to put the game away.
Jones County saw otherwise, staying patient at the plate in the sixth inning to tie the score on three wild pitches in a row followed by a basedloaded hit by pitch. But due to the five-run limit per inning rule, the lead was limited to 17-16 going to the final frame where Western won it against a Jones County team that used three pitchers on Monday: Makinley Still, Lorelai Heath and Emma Sanders.
