This week marks the second of the GHSA’s two dead weeks, a time of which no optional summer team activities are permitted. The dead period ends July 10, giving teams the green light to resume workouts across multiple sports after that.
All fall sports of which Jones County takes part can hold their official first practice Aug. 1 with fast pitch softball being able to play its first game as early as Aug. 4, cheerleading on Aug. 6, volleyball and cross country on Aug. 8 and football on Aug. 19.
The Lady Greyhounds basketball team was among the groups heading into the dead week on a high note was the Lad Greyhounds basketball team.
The Lady Hounds, who didn’t lose a starter to graduation this past season, went 2-1 at a team camp held by Georgia Southwestern.
There was more to the stretch than growing together more as a team for Jones County. Guard Amaris Ridgeway picked up her first college offer during the camp from Georgia Southwestern, an NCAA Division II program that competes in the Peach Belt Conference, whose teams also include Georgia College.
