Local author reads new book to kids at Jones County Public Library

The Jones County Public Library welcomed Sheresa A. Stubbs, a local author, to read her new children’s book July 29 that deals with what it can be like making new friends in a new city when moving.

Stubbs said she lives in Middle Georgia, and she taught in Jones County a long time ago. She said she knows how reading and learning new life lessons is important for growing minds.

“There are down to Earth people here in Jones County, willing to help people with anything,” she said. “They try to help those who are less fortunate. That’s a really great thing to do.”

The author said she was excited to read her book at the Jones County Public Library. She said her book is named Henrietta Moves to a New City.

“My book is about a little girl who finds friendship in another little girl after she is told by her father they are moving. She is upset and doesn’t want to move, but her father told her she’d make new friends. The little girl ends up finding out on her own how relationships work with other kids and tries to get along with all of her friends,” Stubbs said.

She said she’s been writing since she was 24 years old and had the inclination in her to write. She noted children can learn about relationships and how to deal with them if they are shown how to solve issues in a positive way.

Stubbs said she is working on other books, but not children’s books currently. She said she likes a wide variety of topics and wants to work on a novel for adults. She said she still has a passion for children’s books and what children can learn through books.

“The book is important, because it helps children be able to learn and solve problems with other people,” the author said. “They can learn to solve their own relationship problems and get a feel for how they can handle those situations when they come up.”

Stubbs said she wanted to do her book reading at the Jones County Public Library, because it helps to show her book to a wider audience. She said the library was a good starting point, and she’d like to start venturing out into schools next to be able to help children with literacy and relationship issues.

“I think the smaller ones really enjoyed the book, the older ones did as well, but the younger kids got into it more. They were very outstanding when it came to showing their excitement for what was going on. I’m glad I was able to read to them,” she said.

Stubbs said she hopes the children took away that they can write a book one day, too. She said she hopes they understood how the characters resolved their issues, so that they can solve similar issues at home thanks to her book.

“I enjoy the interaction with the children at places like the library, seeing what they are working on or reading,” the author said. “I’m glad I’m able to reach some of them with my book and see the different background levels I’m able to reach.”

Henrietta Moves to a New City can be checked out at the Jones County Public Library, and the book can also be purchased from different sources. The book can also be found at Target, Barnes and Noble and on Amazon.
