EARLY HOOPS
Basketball practice officially began last Monday for both the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds. Each team capped that first week of work on Saturday in their Purple & White Game at the JCHS Gymnasium. The event offered Jones County players an additional chance to play in front a gathering of fans and supporters during the preseason, a road that continues on Saturday when both teams host Peach County at 6:30 p.m. in a scrimmage.
“The kids love to come and play against each other,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris said. “We did some good things and have a lot to work on. If we can play together and play hard on defense, we’ll be pretty good.”
Saturday’s events were comprised of a shooting competition followed by both the girls and boys teams having a 20-minute scrimmage. With teams divided up into two teams for each game, the purple squad won the girls game 39-30 while the boys contest actually went into overtime on a buzzer- beating layup before the Purple team won 46-44.
“I thought it was pretty good. For the community to come out and support us, it was good,” Greyhounds head coach Buck Harris said.
“Saturday will be another good opportunity for us, we have to keep building and getting better. I feel good from our conditioning and workouts, these guys work hard and are a good group. I think they can be really special.”
