GREYHOUND GRAPPLERS
The offseason of various workouts and other team activities officially shifted to preseason mode for the Greyhound wrestlers last Monday with the official start of practice.
Work took place on the mat, viewing film of an Olympic medalists and putting some of that technique into practice.
“We had a really good week of practice. Every year, guys have roles that change from one year to the next, we’ve already had guys step up, which is exciting,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said. “Our guys have really bought in, paying attention to the finer details.”
The Greyhounds open the season Nov. 12 at Morgan County, starting a run of meets, matches and tournaments with the goal being to have things clicking at the apex in time for team and individual region and state tournaments in early 2023.
Jones County wrestles at home for the first time Nov. 19 as it will again host the Gauntlet in Gray at the JCHS Gymnasium. The group that goes into the season will carry the experience of advancing to the state round of duals last year, placing them among the state’s top eight teams. With that experience comes being able to take on more of a workload as the season begins.
“The stuff we did (last) Monday was stuff we did in January and February of last year,” Gillhouse said. “We had a great offseason and summer. We have a group of guys who have a good understanding of what we’re doing.”
That understanding officially beings Nov. 12 with the run of match ups to follow that will even include the Great Smoky Mountain Grapple in December, held in Asheville, N.C.
“Something we really worked on in the offseason is our way of doing things, we have a system of how we teach certain moves,” Gillhouse said. “We want to win every time we go out and compete, but we also want to look for ways to improve. The guys are just so ready to compete. It feels like close to a year since we competed, and these guys are so excited to go out there and put what we have worked on onto the mat.”
