Man charged with aggravated assault against peace officer

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

A disregard for the safety of a law enforcement officer resulted in the arrest of a Macon man on felony charges.

James David Miller, 40, was arrested Nov. 3 and is currently in custody of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, facing the charge of aggravated assault against a peace officer.

The complainant on the incident report is listed as JCSO Investigator Barron Hall, and the target of the assault was Investigator Gerry Nelson.

In a Nov. 8 phone interview, Hall stated that members of the U.S. Marshals Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force accompanied Jones County deputies Nov. 2 to serve a warrant at motel on Gray Highway.

The subject of the warrant was not Miller, but Hall said it was an individual who was living with him. The investigator said Miller is, however, a suspect in several other crimes in Jones County.

“As the marshals pulled up, Miller was seen in the parking lot near his truck. When they tried to approach him, Miller got in his truck and tried to flee,” Hall said.

He said while trying to get away, the suspect hit a pillar of the building, and then headed toward Nelson.

“Miller came close to hitting the officer and crashing into his truck,” Hall said.

The investigator said Nelson was able to jump out of the way, and the suspect kept going. Miller was arrested the following day in Bibb County.

“This incident was serious enough to file charges. He showed a total disregard for the officer’s safety,” Hall stated.
