Tennis teams qualify for state

    After fighting through the region tournament, the state level of competition is next for Jones County’s tennis teams as both placed third last week.

    The Greyhounds began the week in the state tournament at Greenbrier on Monday with the Lady Hounds road swing taking them south play Coffee.

    The Greyhounds, whose strength much of the year has been shown at the No.1 singles and doubles matches, earned a berth in the AAAAA state tournament after wins against Locust Grove and Ola and a loss to Dutchtown. The winner of the boys match will advance to play either Harris County or Decatur in the second round.

    The Lady Hounds, a team that has benefited from a balanced effort all season long, took down Locust Grove and Eagles Landing while losing to Union Grove. The winner of the Lady Hounds’ first-round match will face either Chamblee or Northside-Columbus in the second round. – Brad Harrison
