Rookie softball all-stars battle to final day of state tourney; 8-10 district play underway in Macon
Jones County’s Rookie Softball All Stars rallied back in the weekend’s state tournament in Warner Robins, battling back to the tournament’s final day of play on Sunday.
After losing to Oconee County to start the tournament, a win on Saturday against Hart County advanced the rookie all stars to Sunday, one game away from playing for a state title.
District play also began earlier this week for the 8-10 Baseball All Stars as they began the tournament on Tuesday with the 8-10 Softball All Stars beginning district play this past Monday with a 4-2 loss to Western Little League. Jones County’s Senior League Softball All Stars also kicked off district play on Monday with a 4-3 win. The championship round for senior league is scheduled for Thursday and Sunday for 8-10 tournaments, and all games will take place at Vine Ingle in Macon.
Hammock, Johnson lead GMC to second-place finish at nationals
Georgia Military College’s golf program believes in homegrown talent as shown by three of the nine golfers on its roster being from Jones County in Nick Johnson, Brad Hammock and Austin Mills.
That belief helped the Bulldogs to a secondplace finish in the NJCAA Championships as they set a team scoring record and were led by Johnson and Hammock, both All-Americans.
Johnson finished third overall, tying a school-record with a four-day score of 288 with Hammock coming in eighth with a four-day score of 295. Johnson’s best round came on a first day with a score of 69 with Hammock’s best round coming on the third day with a 71.
Ravens gain plenty to build on in preseason scrimmage
The Georgia Ravens took another step toward next month’s season open on Saturday by scrimmaging the Cherokee County Bruins. Despite losing 28-14, numerous bright spots were evident. TJ Johnson’s big day including three catches for long yardage, a 65-yard kick return and a touchdown pass. As a defense, the Ravens had five sacks, three forced fumbles, an interception and a touchdown.
The Ravens open the season July 8 at the Winchester Ducks and host Cherokee County July 22.
