Lady Hounds remain in thick of race for top of region

GREYHOUND SOFTBALL

With what amounts to the first half of the region softball schedule now in the rear-view mirror, the Lady Greyhounds find themselves not only among the top teams, but also very much in the running to take a swing at the top overall spot in the standings.

The first-place team following the end of the regular season wins the right to host the region tournament.

After a 10-7 Monday win against Locust Grove that gave the Lady Hounds a 5-2 region record, Jones County was one game back of second-place Union Grove, who was 6-1 in region play. Ola led with a 7-0 region record with all three ahead of fourth-place Locust Grove and its 3-4 region mark.

The Lady Hounds won’t have to wait long to make a bigger move. They play Thursday at Ola and wrap up the regular season Oct. 5 at home against Union Grove.

The latter of the two will be a revenge game after last week’s game between the two teams that starkly showed how even the two squads are.

The homestanding Wolverines rallied in the late innings for an 11-10 win after Jones County had a rally of its own. Down 4-0 through the first two frames, the Lady Greyhounds pushed three runs across in the third and four more in the fourth to go up 7-4 and later 9-4 in the top of the fifth.

Tranasia Parker’s homer and four RBIs led Jones County at the plate, but she was hardly the only standout with Kimber Kent having three hits and two hits from Ansley Pegg. Allie Willis, Rylie Faulk and Myah Briscoe each drove in two runs, That, however, was before Union Grove would close in. Down 10-5 going into the bottom of the sixth, Union Grove came back with four runs in the sixth before two more to win it in the seventh.

Pegg pitched five and one-third innings with Cate Downey pitching the final inning of the contest.
