“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phil 4:8).
The Bible gives us examples of what we should allow our minds to dwell on. Notice that all these examples are positive and wholesome--not negative, ugly, depressing, or sinful.
The Bible tells us “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Prov 23:7). God, who made us, understands our frame. He knows that if we allow unhealthy thought patterns to fill our hearts and minds, the result will eventually be an unhealthy lifestyle.
We are what we think!
Think on depressing things, you’ll end up depressed. Think on sinful things, you’ll eventually commit those sins.
Think on negative things, and you’ll have a negative outlook on life. It’s just the way it is.
Some people worry their souls over continuous thoughts of some sickness they think they might get. Some never accomplish much because they always think poorly of themselves. Some never grow as Christians because their hearts are always thinking on the things of the world. And some never overcome sin because they have allowed a sinful thought life to rule them.
Let your mind be filled with thoughts of Jesus.
He is all those things that Paul tells us to think on and when our minds are focused on Jesus, we’ll know His peace and joy.
