Wells Elementary School recently had their fall literacy event, helping students and parents get their hands on material that can help students continue to learn to read.

Ashley White, technology teacher at Wells Elementary School, said they were excited to host the event. She said there was a lot for students to engage in and have some fun as they learned.

“We try to do a literacy event in the fall to bring our parents into the school to help them understand how they can help their child,” she said. “We make it fun for the kids, so our theme was Learning Is Groovy with peace, love and literacy. There were 14 learning stations. Students had to be at least six to be in a drawing to win a bicycle.”

She said the event was important, because they want to provide tools to help students at home with reading. She said the event also helped to get the community back into the school. She said it gave them a great chance to show off the media center, which was just renovated.

The teacher said kindergarteners learned letters, sounds and words. First grade learned about sequencing, second grade learned sight words and contractions, third grade learned about fiction and non-fiction, fourth grade learned technological information, and fifth grade learned about fiction and non-fiction.

“We hope the kids realized they are learning in a fun way. We wanted them all to go home with a book. This was supposed to be an engaging evening with fun and learning going hand in hand,” White said.

She said it’s important to know how to read, because by third grade the students are reading to learn. She said it’s important that the students have a good foundation for reading. The teacher said she wants them to be excited to be lifelong learners.

White said her favorite part about Learning Is Groovy was that everyone was ready to come out and learn something about literacy. She said she was glad to see so many students and parents taking the opportunity at Wells Elementary School to continue education.

“The kids have been talking about the event, and they were excited. We really tried to talk it up,” she said. “We just want the kids to be excited about reading. They have been super excited about getting back into the library. We hope the event inspired them to want to read even more.
