–George Sheffield When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. (Mt 2:10-11) About a year or so after Jesus was born, the Wise Men showed up in Bethlehem. By this time the Holy Family had moved from the barn to a house, and Jesus was about 1 or 2 years old. The Wise Men never saw Jesus as a baby in a manger. These men were educated, regal, foreign dignitaries, advisors to their own kings, schooled in astronomy and the science of that day. They had obviously studied the Hebrew scriptures because from Num 24:17, they understood a great King would be born, signaled by His Star.
They brought gifts: Gold--symbol of a King; Frankincense--incense used by the priests in the temple; and Myrrh--spice used for burial. Jesus the King of kings.
Jesus our High Priest. Jesus the sacrificial Lamb for our sins.
When the Wise Men saw Jesus they rejoiced and fell down and worshiped Him. Christmas is a time of rejoicing but it’s also a time of worship. A holy birthday celebration. Be like wise men--rejoice and celebrate, but fall down and worship Jesus your King.
