Seniors crowned in big win over Veterans

A few days removed from a top-five finish at the state team duals, Thursday night’s dual match for the Greyhounds against Veterans was icing on the cake.

The night produced a sweet result for Jones County. In an evening in which JCHS celebrated its seniors, the Greyhounds dominated Veterans, winning 57-14, as they landed five pins and also began the dual with nine-straight match wins.

“It’s good to finish out the season out right at home, we had a great crowd. All of our seniors got a win, and it was a great way to send off our seniors,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said. “We got a win as a team, and it was a great way to finish out the season for them.”

It was in the midst of a lively atmosphere inside the JCHS gymnasium, with add-ons including walk-out music for each Greyhound wrestler as they took the mat and support from the stands by cheerleaders from Turner Woods Elementary.

“Our thing is that we want to raise the standard as a program, and that’s one thing as coaches we want to try and do, provide the best environment we can for our kids to wrestle in,” Gillhouse said.

It was also a victory on senior night leading into the individual portion of the season that will begin at this weekend’s region traditional tournament at Ola. Getting a win on senior night was a tangible motivation for Jones County, which lost to Perry on senior night last year.

“It was a big deal. Last year, we wrestled Perry here for senior night and it didn’t go the way we wanted,” Gillhouse said. “It was a big deal for us to get a win on senior night.”

Landon Lewis’ 8-2 win began the match for Jones County, and that win was followed up with a Hunter McCleskey pin, a 9-7 victory from Peyton Thompson and pins by Aiden Lipford and Jackson Brown.

A pair of wins via forfeit to Shawn Huckeba and Carson Lumley combined with a 10-4 win by Robert Scott, extending the JCHS lead to 45-0. Wins via pin by Garrett Green and Will Agudelo in the final two matches wrapped up the Greyhounds’ 57-14 win.
