BOYS HOOPS
Whether or not the Greyhounds return to the state tournament will come down to next week’s region tournament.
After a pair of losses last week to a pair of teams hitting their stride, Jones County is seeking momentum this week. Jones County closes the season at home Friday against first-place Dutchtown after hosting Ola Tuesday of this week for senior night.
Jones County (16-6. 6-4) fell 68-56 last Tuesday at Eagles Landing, despite 18 points from Jaleel Jordan and 16 from Kaden Douglas plus 12 from Jaden Stanley. On Friday at Warner Robins, the Demons were able to take advantage of the game’s pace slowing down, doing damage at the free-throw line by going 13-of-21 from the charity stripe in the third quarter of a 73-62 win.
“We made too many fouls.
They probably shot 20 or 30 free throws,” Greyhounds head coach Buck Harris said. “If we make some shots, it’s a different ball game.”
Jaden Stanley scored 17 points and sank a pair of three pointers for Jones County, which kept pace to remain close with other three pointers by Tay Lattimore, Daniel Woodkins and Jakeylan Wilburn.
The Demons, who led 34-29 at halftime by way of a 5-0 run before halftime, rallied to trail 41-37 midway through the third on a free throw by Stanley, who would also draw JCHS to trail 50-45 with 2:01 to play before Warner Robins did what it was able to do multiple times on Friday – counter a scoring run by the Greyhounds with one of its own. The Demons would hold JCHS at bay the rest of the game, preventing the Greyhounds from going on a run to outscore them by five points in the final quarter. “I thought our effort was good.
We just didn’t’ get a stop when we needed to,” Harris said.
