GYM HOUNDS
The Gym Hounds began their season with a nice start on Saturday at Elite Gymnastics. Not only did Jones County finish first among the schools in its size grouping, but another gymnast also took a major step toward qualifying for the state meet.
Chloe Clark, who spent the offseason recovering from a meniscus injury, earned a score of 8.5 on the beam.
That’s one of three scores that she needs to qualify for state. Clark finished second on Saturday in both the beam and all-around. Also leading Jones County was Caroline Barfield who finished third in bars, floor routine, and all-around.
“It’s really exciting because I had surgery in May,” Clark said. “It’s been a long, eight-month recovery, it’s just surreal to come back to ace the one skill I was nervous about.”
A pair of first places by Alexa Johnson in the vault, bars and all-around helped the Gym Hounds win the JV meet with another first coming from MacKenzie Ward on the beam. Eighth grader Addie Milner was second on the bars with Johnson finishing second on the beam. Milner was second in all-around and fourth in the floor routine.
“We were a little nervous having only three weeks practice, but it’s been real fun,” Clark said.
JCHS competes again Feb. 17 at Elite Gymnastics with Washington County serving as the host.
