A trio of three-game series against region teams remain for the Greyhounds to end the regular season. The first of them wraps up in a Friday doubleheader against Dutchtown, a matchup that could shape Jones County’s chances of making it into the state playoffs.
Jones County began this week with a 3-6 region record after being swept by second-place Ola last week. After a 9-0 home loss last Tuesday, the Mustangs took the other two games on Thursday by scores of 10-2 and 4-1.
The Mustangs pulled away late on Tuesday, breaking up a close game with five runs in the final three innings. The Greyhounds were able to put the ball in play often with few strikeouts being landed by Ola. Of the 26 plate appearances by Jones County, only four resulted in strikeouts. Despite that, Mustangs were able to make plays in the field to prevent JCHS from getting much going at the plate.
Jones County got a strong finish, putting runners in scoring position in the final two innings. The Greyhounds ended up with four hits coming from Noah Robinson, Kaylob Harris, Cohen Barfield and Brayden Lampkin.
But the focus for JCHS now shifts ahead to pursuit of a postseason spot. That’s where Dutchtown comes into play. The Bulldogs are 1-5-1 in the region with two games against Warner Robins also yet to be played. Jones County’s region games after this week are against front-running Locust Grove and next-to-last place Warner Robins with Dutchtown to play firstplace Union Grove and last-place Eagles Landing. It’s for that reason that the winner of this week’s set of games between the Greyhounds and Bulldogs will have a likely upper hand toward a postseason spot.
