Track teams finish strong ahead of region meet

Last week provided the final chance for JCHS track and field athletes to get in strong showings before the region meet April 30 to May 2 at Ola. Top finishers there will advance to sections, which will qualify for the state meet May 9-11 in Carrollton.

A number of Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds took full advantage in two separate meets, and that included those competing in the field events.

It all began last Tuesday in a meet hosted by Lamar County. Jaivon Solomon won first in the triple jump with a leap of 44-09.50, and Austin Hanks also took first with a discus throw of 147-00. Derrick Cleveland was not far behind in the shot put, where his throw of 41-09.00 took second. DJ Ingram was fifth in the long jump at 19-09.00 The Lady Greyhounds were near the front in the girls field events. Mya Anderson was fifth in the long jump at 16-01.25, Angel Dennis’ throw of 79-05 took fourth in the discus and Diamond Sinclair took fifth in the shot put via a throw of 26-09.00 Jones County excelled in the shorter-distance running events, as usual. Times of 10.65 and 22.11 got Tyler Stewart the win in the 100- and 200-meter events as on the girls side, Anzoria Bivins was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.77 and Anderson was third in the 200, running a 26.83.

Grady Newby’s 2:11.15 time took second in the 800 meters while 54:00 by Zaccheus Jackson gave him fourth in the 400 meters. In the boys 1600 meters, Rylan Fuller was fifth as he ran a 5:03.68.

The Lady Greyhounds placed third in the 4x100 relay with a time of 52.91 with the team being made up of Mylan Ragins, Anderson, Kemora Sydney and Zandrea Thomas. Thomas, Syndey, Bivins and Yariah Webb ran to a fourth-place finish in the 4x200 with a time of 1:54.85.

History repeated itself at Thursday’s Hawkinsville meet, where Stewart won 100 meters with a time of 10.63 and the 200 with a run of 21.82. JCHS swept the top three in the 100 meters with Solomon and Bruno Hicks coming in second and third with times of 10.10.80. Hicks also took first in the 400 meters, running a 54.35. Jeremiah Edwards was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18:09.

The Greyhounds swept the top three in the 1600 meters with Luke Thornton, Tyler Marshall and Gavin Robinson’s times of 4:32.77, 4:34.47 and 4:42.81.

In relay events, Jones County was second in the 4x400 and 4x800, turning in times of 3:44.18 and 8:29.98.

Solomon and Hanks added more first-places in field events. Solomon’s jump of 45-00.00 was first in the triple jump with Hanks’ throws of 146-10.00 and 52-02.00 taking the top spot in the discus and shot put.

The Lady Greyhounds’ top finishes at Hawkinsville included three finishes in the top five of the 1600 meters with second, third and fourthplace showings by Addison Robinson, Lilly Palmer and Isabella Sanchez as they ran times of 5:25.66, 5:32.07 and 5:36.43. A pair of third places came by way of Mya Anderson’s 200-meter time of 28:04 and Ragins’ 1:08.29 in the 400 meters. Anderson also took first in the long jump at 15-10.00 along with Angel Dennis doing so in the discus with a throw of 86-7.50.

Along with first place in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:01.32, the Lady Hounds were fourth in the 4x400 at 4:19.74 and second in the 4x100, running a 52:53.
