The official start of basketball season is still a few weeks away with the first day of actual practice allowed by the GHSA being Oct. 21.
But that does not mean there’s a lack of work going on around the hardwood in Jones County. The Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds will host the final Saturday of a multi-week fall league tournament on Saturday. Other teams have included Westside, Northeast, Lamar County and Bleckley County.
Both teams have welcomed teams from nearby in a format similar to summer tournaments. In these recent games, teams’ head coaches can be in the gym watching but cannot interact during gameplay.
“It’s kind of an extension of a summer; it helps us see how we kind of match up,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “With us being new coaches, it helps them pick up our system. It helps them know what to expect.”
During these games, with the Lady Hounds at JCHS and Greyhounds at Gray Station Middle, coaches are able to further evaluate the whole of the roster as JCHS has fielded two teams.
Game play begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with each venue’s admission being $5.
Jones County will host its alumni game Nov. 9, scrimmages Houston County Nov. 12 and opens the season Nov. 15 against Putnam County.
